Mission statement and objective

Mount Elgon Trust wants: 
To sustainably enhance the economic and living standards of the Chepchoina area on the northern slopes of Mount Elgon in western Kenya. This is done with an integrated approach, taking into account developing the knowledge and skills of the people by providing educational services, improving the local labour market, offering adequate medical facilities and providing adequate living facilities. 


The objective of Mount Elgon Trust is: 
Mount Elgon Trust aims a alleviating poverty, reducing illiteracy levels, reducing mortality rates and improving health conditions as well as promote morality.


The Trust uses the 'Millenium Development Goals' of the United Nations as a framework. The eight Millennium Development Goals are:

  • Eradicate extreme poverty & hunger
  • Achieve universal primary education
  • Promote gender equality and empower women
  • Reduce child mortality
  • Improve maternal health
  • Combat HIV/Aids, malaria and other diseases
  • Ensure environmental sustainability
  • Develop a global partnership for development


The focus lies on the development of the region, therefore specific attention is given to participation of local residents and involvement of the local church. This way the Trust ensures a sustainable involvement of and specific focus on the local people. As part of this approach the Trust is actively working together with the local and national governments.
